BACKGROUND
The International Climate Initiative (IKI) has been supporting climate and biodiversity projects in partner countries since 2008. It has been part of the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Climate (BMWK) since 2022 and is implemented in cooperation with the Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation, Nuclear Safety and Consumer Protection (BMUV) and the Federal Foreign Office (AA). The three ministries pool and integrate their own priorities and competences in the IKI. The four major funding areas of the IKI have remained the same over time, as have the form of the calls for funding and the integrative project approaches. The IKI Office of Zukunft-Umwelt-Gesellschaft (ZUG) gGmbH (IKI Office (ZUG)) supports the federal institutions in implementing the IKI.
TASKS
As part of the IKI Topic Call 2024, we undertook the technical, methodological and organisational assessment of pre-selected project outlines in Lot 1 “Mitigation”. The aim was to carry out an independent evaluation according to defined criteria and thus contribute to the selection of eligible projects in the field of climate protection. At the beginning, we reviewed the project outlines and the evaluation framework and prepared for participation in the kick-off meetings. We then evaluated the project outlines in tandem using a standardized assessment grid. In addition, we conducted background research on the consortia and the funding landscape to assess competencies and potential synergies.
We prepared the results for the virtual evaluation meeting, presented them there, and responded to follow-up questions. Afterwards, we contributed to the feedback letters for unsuccessful applicants and participated in a reflection meeting aimed at further developing the evaluation process.
