The International Climate Initiative (IKI) has been funding projects on climate mitigation, adaptation to climate change, conservation of carbon sinks and protection of biodiversity in developing and emerging countries on a project basis since 2008. Since 2022, it has been implemented jointly by the Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation, Nuclear Safety and Consumer Protection (BMUV), the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Climate Protection (BMWK) and the Federal Foreign Office (AA). In total, the IKI now includes more than 950 individual projects in over 150 countries (as of April 2023), making it one of the most important climate financing mechanisms worldwide. In the IKI selection process for 2022, consortia were able to apply for funding with project outlines for twelve different thematic priorities. The thematic priorities included Divestment strategies, NDC implementation through sector coupling and Deforestation-free supply chains of agricultural raw materials.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The team was responsible for the evaluation of the submitted project proposals in the two lots of energy and mitigation for seven different thematic priorities: 1) Net Zero by 2050 without fossil fuels: The role of gas in the decarbonisation of the energy sector; 2) Divestment strategies and other innovative approaches to redirect private and public financial flows into climate-friendly alternatives; 3) Agri-photovoltaics \u2013 promotion of photovoltaic expansion on agricultural land; 4Climate-friendly continued use and re-use of former power plant sites; 5) NDC implementation through sector coupling; 6) Climate-neutral regional development through environmentally sound raw material extraction and processing in the countries of the SADC region; and 7) Deforestation-free supply chains of agricultural commodities.
In total, Arepo and the external consultants evaluated 35 sketches. Arepo also conducted background research on the project landscapes in the respective countries and on the consortia.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
