Sector targets are also increasingly in place at the state level. This is because the federal states are increasingly recognizing that effective climate protection must also be implemented regionally. Most of the states now have state climate protection laws that strive for and implement climate protection with more or less ambition. The basis for this is often the Federal Climate Protection Act. This defines sector targets that can be applied to the states using different logics and algorithms. This also applies to carbon budgets. Adhering to carbon budgets such as those called for by the German Advisory Council on the Environment or Fridays for Future requires an even significantly higher level of ambition than adhering to federal climate targets. Nevertheless, there are a few among the federal states who are trying to derive and operationalize a carbon budget for their state. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
